Westport

Some of the greatest experiences while travelling are the surprises that you never saw coming.
Ireland.

The highlight of Wesport was the surprise detour on our drive there.  We were treated to an Irish coffee at Ashford Castle and a hawk walk with Ireland's School of Falconry! Both were beyond my expectations.

Once in Westport we had the remaining day and evening free.  Mom and I spent some time shopping and then joined up with Mike and Glenda for an Italian feast before hitting the pub for drinks and music.  For only one night, Westport did not disappointment on the entertainment.

Until Ashford Castle I hated Bailey's in my coffee, after Ashford Castle...I so get it now.  Having a true Irish coffee has allowed me to appreciate the flavor of Bailey's.  That coffee was the best specialty coffee I have ever had.  It was so nice to be able to sit inside the Castle, sipping my coffee and taking it all in.  The inside is elegantly decorated and the grounds are perfectly manicured with views overlooking the lake.  Mike plans to stay there on his next visit to Ireland.

Wow, our own private hawk walk thru the woodlands surrounding the castle.  Not only did everyone get a turn with the glove and releasing the hawk but we learned so much about the birds from their trainer.  This was an unique experience that added to our vacation.

After our hawk walk we were the only tour members who stayed behind at the Castle to have lunch.  It was of course quite lovely.  Then we walked along the river bank back into town to catch our bus to Westport.

When I heard that Westport had a nice Italian restaurant, we were all in for a change of pace.  I wanted to order courses like you  would in Italy, their menu was set out to do just that.  But then all at once our appetizers, main courses and side dishes were delivered to our table.  I didn't know what to say.  Usually an Italian feast is heavy enough over a three hour meal...letalone served all at once.  The owner came out after awhile and saw our table and was embarrassed, he knew the error and apologized over and over.  No worries, all the dishes were very well prepared and delicious.  We just didn't have any room for dessert.

Fully stuffed we made our way down to a local pub for some live music.  We wanted to get there early and save our seats, which leads to drinking even more.  It was a great night.  The group started small and little by little more would show up, pull out their music instrument and join in.  By the end they were fiddling on the tables and the whole place was singing.  I love Ireland!
